Mission Berlin Review - Deutsche Welle - Free Resource

Guten Tag!

Today’s free resource is courtesy of the Deutsche Welle website. I’ll add a link to it at the end. It’s called Mission Berlin, but there are also two other versions called Mission Paris (to learn French) and Mission Kraków (to learn Polish).

First off, let’s talk about Deutsche Welle. They have a ton of free resources, and are essentially helping and encouraging people to learn German for free. They’ve got an app: DWLearnGerman which is full of content from A1 through to C1.

The app is loaded with content but the website also includes additional sources. I recommend checking out both.

Back to Mission Berlin. This follows the story of a young woman (Anna) who is on a mission to save Berlin. It’s a completely audio course; spanning 26 podcast episodes of approximately 5 minutes each. The audio sets the scene like it’s a game ‘You have 120 minutes and 3 lives remaining.’

It’s 100% A1 content. Anna is in Berlin without any real German knowledge. Some of the content involves characters speaking in German with one another, whilst Anna (like us) makes out the odd words. Don’t worry though, her trusty helper (a robot whose name I can’t recall) acts as a translator. He translates the important parts, and provides useful information about grammar. Although it isn’t particularly heavy so the podcast still remains fun.

It’s a nice little intro to the language and very enjoyable. And it’s entirely free. I would really recommend it.
